Intelligence Support against Poaching ISAP NEWS 7

08-12-2015

The most serious impact of poaching will be felt in our specially protected game species. The killing of rhino has been well documented, also the increased illegal killing of elephants, whether desert adapted or not, is potentially impacting on the biodiversity in our various ecosystems. However, it should not be forgotten that killing of wild lion, for the use of bones and other body parts in Asiatic countries is on the increase all over the continent, and has reduced the total population of wild male “trophy” lion on the continent to a mere 3500 animals. The discussion as to motivate whether wild lion should be added to the Red Data list (CITES) might not be in the brief of ISAP, but with data collection we might impact on the ultimate, and that is to achieve a listing by CITES.)
